Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a Psychiatric Social Worker in a high school for visual and performing arts. My students come from all over LAUSD and have the pressure to perform academically as well as in their chosen art form (music, art, theater, dance or media arts). Many of our students experience mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression as well as homelessness, trauma and grief. My goal is to provide a space for them when they are triggered and become dysregulated. In the music office where I am located there is a space that would be perfect for them to relax and regulate themselves. It would be beneficial for students to have a safe space to be when they are struggling emotionally. They may be able to calm down on their own and return to class or can utilize the space while they wait for me or another counselor to attend to their needs. Students have asked for a space like this several times and I would love to provide this therapeutic calming space for them to reconnect with themselves with the help of activities that get them in touch with all of their senses and support them in being mindful. The sooner they can become regulated, the sooner they can return to class and engage with the curriculum. I want my students to feel loved, supported and guided in practicing self care which will also help them academically as they learn to manage their feelings. Thank you for considering my project.
