My Students
It might first appear that my kindergarten and first grade students have all odds stacked against them. However, no one should judge a book by its cover. The majority of my students are given many labels (at-risk, special education, second language learners, Title I students, etc.) but what really defines them is their positive attitude, curious spirit and work ethic.
Every day my students fight the stereotypes that others use to define them and then succeed despite any hardships they do face.
My Project
Students in my classroom often struggle with social skills, repetitive behaviors, communication, and sensory processing. Each year there is a wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed with each student. In order to learn, we must first address these needs.
If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn.
Many students in my classroom have strengths that position them above grade level in academic areas and may, one day, go on to create and develop leading inventions. However, these geniuses in the making need to be taught how to control their own bodies and these sensory tools will help them do just that.
The sensory items in this project will aid in that project. For example, the body sock and cozy shade both provide the proprioceptive input (deep pressure) to the child's entire body. This input is very calming and can assist with regulation of the child's arousal level. The fidget toys, on the other hand, provide sensory input in a less distracting way. The fidgets can improve concentration and attention to tasks by allowing the brain to filter out the extra sensory information. Thank-you for considering giving to my students that need to address sensory needs prior to being able to learn.
