My Students

I have the pleasure and honor of teaching early intervention social skills classes. My classroom houses six classes throughout the week of wonderful preschool children 3-5 years of age, who are learning how to navigate their world socially. Some of my students have a diagnosis of autism, while other students demonstrate significant social delays. Numbers, letters, and most cognitive skills come easily to my students. However, learning how to manage their emotions, interact with their peers, and be part of the classroom community are the skills that are challenging for them.

The social skills class provides a valuable service to the parents of the children.

Each social skills class has a parent education group at the end of the session. During the parent group, the parents can express the needs they have in their home, challenges they are facing, or concerns they have. Together as a group, we discuss those issues. Staff work with parents to help one another and provide support to each other.

My Project

By having a calming zone in our classroom, the students will learn how to stop, think, and calm down when faced with upsetting situations. When my students take a moment and remove themselves from the situation, this provides them the opportunity to focus on their feelings and manage those feelings. They are then able to see the problem and determine a solution to the problem.

By going into the calm own tent, the students will have the sensory materials combined with visual cues they need to help them manage their emotions.

The students will then be able to determine the problem and the solution. Our classroom has the tent and the visuals, now all we need are the mat (for safety), pillow, and the sensory materials. Thank you for your time and help with this important project!
