As a school counselor to an elementary school in a low income neighborhood, I have come very familiar with the everyday struggles that our students face. As a culturally diverse school and more than half of the students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, school is certainly not taken for granted. While I cannot change the environment in which the students call home, I strive to provide all the resources and tools for our students at school in order to help them achieve both academically and socially. In order to be successful in schools, these kids deserve a safe and inviting space to address academic barriers through a focus on social and emotional learning.
All children deserve equitable access to counseling services focused on academic success and social-emotional development.
In the bay area, elementary school counselors are growing due to the need that every student needs an advocate, supporter, and believer. Our students are young, bright and determined. Despite the apparent achievement gaps and economic status of our families, our students are determined to grow and positively impact our world.
My Project
Students need a safe place to come and calm down from strong emotions. At this age, kids are learning everyday how to regulate and manage their emotions and having a specific place where kids can come to do that is invaluable.
Teaching kids to calm down in a healthy way will have lifelong benefits.
With the different sensory fidgets, noise-cancelling headphones, and comfy seating area, kids will be able to self-regulate their emotions. By setting a timer, kids can then take the designated amount of time to breathe, listen to calming music, and ultimately then return back to the classroom. Whether it's thirty minutes, or just five, every little moment is important for these students to feel in-control.
We can't expect kids to learn when their emotions are all over the place. They need to gain a sense of self-control over their bodies and minds. This area of my room will allow students to stop and think, handle their emotions, and be mindful.
