My classroom consists of 29 preschool-aged students of mixed abilities. I have 14 students in my morning class which consists of students ages 3-4 and 15 students in my afternoon class who are 4-5 years old. My classroom is a mix of students with IEPs and behavior plans as well as some private pay students.
My class is filled with students who are working every day to better themselves!
I want them all to feel equal and valued in my classroom. They are wonderful young students who are eager to learn and have been so great in a time of adversity. They deserve all I can give them and more. This is my plea to help them.
My Project
We have recently started talking more about our emotions and feelings. We are learning on how to not only express our feelings but how to read others' emotions as well. In February we are really going to focus our learning on these topics. I have recently begun creating a "calm down corner" in our classroom for our students to go to when they are feeling overwhelmed by their emotions. Currently there is a bean bag and some books in there, and I would really like to take the next few weeks to expand upon their materials as well as create visuals on how to appropriately use them. Different tools such as sensory bottles, sensory toys, bubbles, pinwheels and theraputty will help the children work through their emotions. Light filtering covers and a soft rug will help create a cozy space for the children. The addition of some new books such as “How do Dinosaurs Say I’m Mad” will teach the students how to handle their emotions in fun ways! This will all tie in with our monthly theme and really support these students when they go to Kindergarten as well as prepare them for the future as a whole.
"When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions it is our job to share our calm, not to join their chaos." When working with a special education population, one child's chaos can unravel a whole classroom.
In order to teach effectively I need to teach my students how to deal with not only their own emotions but also help others handle their emotions as well. This is something we are working on, and these materials will go a long way in supporting that learning.
