The curved shape allows me to sit close to each student, making it easier to provide individualized support while still encouraging collaboration. We use the tabletop surface to write directly on during guided reading, word work, and math problem-solving. During a recent second grade opinion writing lesson, students gathered around the table to brainstorm ideas for a class writing project about whether recess should be longer. They used dry erase markers to list reasons, circle strong evidence, and revise their sentences together. Having the ability to quickly erase and adjust their thinking helped them take more risks and feel confident sharing their ideas.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the kidney whiteboard table, they were immediately excited and eager to use it. Several students asked, \"We get to write on the table?\" and couldn't wait for their turn in small group. The novelty of writing on the surface increased engagement, especially for students who are sometimes hesitant to participate. During our recent math lesson on two-digit addition with regrouping, students worked through problems together, explaining their thinking step by step as they solved equations on the table. They were more willing to show their work and correct mistakes because it felt less permanent than paper.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students include using the kidney whiteboard table to draft and revise their upcoming informational writing pieces. We will begin researching animals and organizing facts using shared graphic organizers drawn directly on the table. I also plan to continue using the table for targeted reading intervention groups, focusing on decoding strategies and fluency practice to support students who are working toward grade-level benchmarks. The kidney whiteboard table has already strengthened engagement and collaboration, and I am excited to see how it continues to support student growth.","fullyFundedDate":1765757414111,"projectUrl":"project/help-our-second-graders-learn-together/9883335/","projectTitle":"Help Our Second Graders Learn Together","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Scheyd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6409567_orig.jpg?crop=272,272,x121,y170&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1556754885835","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6409567"},{"teacherId":6409567,"projectId":9585007,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our Secret Stories Phonics project has truly transformed the way my second graders approach reading and writing. We use the Secret Stories daily during our phonics and literacy blocks to unlock the \"secrets\" behind tricky letter sounds and patterns. The colorful posters and engaging stories have made decoding words exciting and meaningful for every student.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite classroom moments happened when we were working on a writing project about Fall. As students began spelling words like \"apple\" and \"Halloween,\" they eagerly referenced the posters and whispered the \"secrets\" to themselves to figure out which letters made certain sounds. It was amazing to see their confidence grow as they applied what they had learned to real writing.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students' eyes lit up. They couldn't wait to learn the \"secret codes\" and immediately started guessing what each story might be about. Their excitement made our first few lessons feel like a treasure hunt for reading knowledge!\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using the Secret Stories to strengthen students' fluency and comprehension. We're beginning a reading and writing project that focuses on creating class storybooks, where students will apply the phonics patterns they've learned to write and illustrate their own stories. The Secret Stories have given them the tools—and the confidence—to become proud, independent readers and writers.","fullyFundedDate":1755548609789,"projectUrl":"project/secret-stories-phonics-for-our-second-gr/9585007/","projectTitle":"Secret Stories Phonics for Our Second Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Scheyd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6409567_orig.jpg?crop=272,272,x121,y170&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1556754885835","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6409567"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80266","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":256,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":22,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":68.1,"schoolId":80266,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about New Searles Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"New Searles Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-42/new-searles-elementary-school/80266"}
