Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at GES are a unique mix of students from 5 continents across the world. We speak over 7 languages at Galindo and our students come from backgrounds that are as unique as they are.
While we all have unique backgrounds and needs, what binds us together is our love for our school and our community.
At Galindo Elementary, we serve students from 3 years old to 11 years old in grades PK through 5th grade.
As the principal of the school, my focus is to help reach the whole child through the use of restorative discipline tools and Social Emotional Learning.
My Project
My students need a safe place to think about their feelings when they are upset. Children are typically sent to the office when they have "flipped their lids". I think it is important for students to understand why they needed a break and ask for a calm down break proactively rather than being sent down to the office in a reactive way.
A principal's office usually congers up images of punishment and fear, however I would like to provide a safe calm down corner where students can take a sensory break and recharge before going back to class.
Our brains need sensory breaks, and it is important for students to realize this and advocate for themselves.
