My students need a safe place to think about their feelings when they are upset. Children are typically sent to the office when they have "flipped their lids". I think it is important for students to understand why they needed a break and ask for a calm down break proactively rather than being sent down to the office in a reactive way. A principal's office usually congers up images of punishment and fear, however I would like to provide a safe calm down corner where students can take a sensory break and recharge before going back to class. Our brains need sensory breaks, and it is important for students to realize this and advocate for themselves.
