I teach at a rural Title I school. My classroom consists of 20-25 third grade students. The majority of my students live below the poverty level and receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from single family homes or are being raised by grandparents.
Even with these hardships, you couldn't find a more persistent group of students.
They strive every day to learn and push themselves. Their parents work with them at home tirelessly, so they can get the education they need to accomplish their desires.
My Project
I have many students in my classroom that are dealing with trauma. Dealing with trauma at such a young age can have negative effects on brain development and emotional regulation. I want to be proactive in my classroom and create a space for students dealing with trauma, focus issues, or ones just needing a break to refocus.
My classroom calm down corner will be labeled the "Refocus Corner" because many of my children deal with their trauma by shutting down instead of showing anger.
It will be a safe space that allows children to practice self-regulation. For my children dealing with significant trauma, it will be a safe place to recharge. For my ADHD students, it will be a place to refocus their minds. For any student who just needs a break, it will be a zone to allow that.
The fidget toys, mesh ball, fidget cube, speed cube ball, and mermaid sequin pillow will provide sensory activities that allow students to refocus their minds. The bath mat will provide a soft surface to sit on. While the mood flip book will help them begin to analyze their feelings. The Refocus Corner will also use different timers, so that students will return to their work after an appropriate duration. The Refocus Corner will not be for avoiding work since students will be responsible for any work they miss while visiting the safe zone.
I am hoping that adding this area to my classroom, along with my flexible seating options, will create a classroom that meets the needs of my many diverse students.
