For the last two years people I have spoken to outside of school undoubtedly express that they "can't imagine teaching and being in school post-Covid." I always express that it has been incredibly challenging for students and teachers, but that barely scratches the surface. Coming back to school post-Covid has been a challenge unlike anything we have ever experienced. Students have returned with trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and so many more mental needs that teachers are only barely equipped to support. My students are not immune to these struggles—in fact we have seen massive upticks in detrimental behaviors, referrals to counselors, and an overall drop in moral at my school. I do my best to create an environment that students want to be in despite everything they have endured for the last 3 years of the pandemic. More and more kids come to me looking for a safe place to settle themselves.
Through these supplies I will continue to enhance my ability to support my students who need a safe space to retreat to when they need to reset emotionally.
I plan on utilizing a barren section of my classroom to develop a "Calm Corner" that my students can use as a place to take a mental break. When student teaching, my mentor had a calm corner she used with her elementary students. Her students utilized it with such respect for the classroom boundaries, and it helped the children develop emotional literacy through actively identifying how they were feeling in a moment. I hope to adapt the space to fit the needs of older students, to establish the same type of emotional literacy. Just because my students are older does not mean that they have everything figured out. Sometimes they just need a comfortable chair, in a quiet, safe room.
