My students need sensory tools to help them ease anxiety at the beginning of the year, and calming tools to help them cope with everyday stress so they can focus their attention on learning.
My students are entering my classroom from all different 4K sites, and are trying to assimilate with the rules of their new school. Some students know each other, but it is a lot of new people to meet right off the bat.
At five years old, social and emotional norms that adults expect do not come easy.
It takes practice, and reassurance. We have a lovely school and neighborhood, and I would love to uphold the standards my school has placed on my students. Our school is full of hard-working, imaginative students and I want to start them off right in kindergarten.
My Project
Kindergarten can be a stressful time for a lot of students who are used to staying home with mom and dad. When the arrive, there are a lot of new expectations, new faces, and their time away from home seems like it lasts forever.
They need tools to help them cope with these anxieties and big feelings.
For some of these students, this is their first experience with sharing and working with other students their age. This can bring up unexpected feelings that they don't know how to cope with properly.
Designated safe spots created using bean bags feelings mirrors, and fidgets as well a sound machine will create a calming atmosphere. Books will also help them understand how to deal with their feelings and will be an awesome addition to our classroom. They can learn to use these tools independently and discover ways to handle their feelings. Then they will hopefully transfer these new skills to all aspects of their lives.
