Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Having access to a calm-down corner is an asset to any classroom. It is a designated space where my students can feel safe to feel and express all the emotions they go through at this young age. The calm-down corner itself, as well as the tools provided in this project, will help them to regain control independently. I currently have a teepee tent in my room but it has been knocked over countless times this year. I believe that this type of tent I am requesting will not get knocked over when in use.
An appropriate calm-down corner will give my students an opportunity to express their emotional and physical needs, in a corner made especially to help each student regain control.
The calm down corner gives students an area to calm down when needed, when other students see someone go to the calm corner, they know that something may be wrong. Sometimes students walk other students to the calm corner and sit down with them and talk to them. This teaches compassion for others and helps students show that they care for a fellow student. This helps alleviate suffering in others by giving a hand and showing that you love and care for your classmates.
My active learners are in-between developmental stages of learning, as well as varying levels of social-emotional development. Learning how to calm down and rejoin the classroom is a life skill every child needs to learn. I can measure the success through this project by seeing the changes in my students from being able to have access to the calm corner. I will be able to see changes in their attitude when they have a place to go when they need to re-adjust.
