Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you were in first grade and just learning to read? How nice would it be for the children to be able to be comfy and cozy as they learn to LOVE reading? We NEED a space like this (with pillows and cushions) in order for my children to develop a love of reading.

My students are in the first grade in a public school in Illinois.

We are in a low income school. The majority of my students are African American and Hispanic. Most of the school receives free or reduced lunch. They are wonderful children who have a hunger to learn!

My Project

I am envisioning a quiet and comfy space for my children to WANT to go to when they read. I am asking for a canopy so that I can define the space. I think the children will really like being inside the canopy to read. I am also asking for some cushions and a bean bag chair so that the children will be able to "cuddle up" and read. Right now, I have a pillow and a few large stuffed animals in the space but, I am looking to make it more inviting as our goal for first grade to read, read, read.

My goal as a first grade teacher is to instill a life long love of reading in my students.

I am hoping that with these additions to my library area that the children will want to be in tent to read. My vision is that I will have to beg them to stop reading! This will also make the act of reading a lot less stressful as groups of students will be able to spread out and relax as they read. Isn't that what we want for our beginning readers? (A love of reading and thinking of it as FUN!)
