My Students

I teach in the inner city in Cleveland Metropolitan School District. My students are in the highest poverty bracket with 100% free breakfast and lunch daily. My students struggle with severe poverty that often causes homelessness, frequent moves, and living with extended family members. Often, my students come to school without proper nourishment, clothing appropriate for the weather, and without school supplies to help them become successful.

My 4th and 5th grade students come to school eager to learn but often lack supplies to be successful.

With this project, I intend to add materials to our classroom that will enhance our learning and classroom environment. I have included items that will be used for "enter/exit tickets", small group work, and independent exploration. The requested items will enhance their learning while providing opportunities they may not normally have.

My Project

The materials that I requested will help students to track their work and keep pace with assignments. The binder rings will be used for a new project I am trying out this year called "Swag Tags". Students will earn tags to clip on their rings for a wide variety of achievements. Students will keep their tags as a special reminder of their accomplishments. Glue sticks are always in short supply and I will use this pack to replenish students as needed. We do a LOT of interactive notebooks in class and we go through a LOT of glue.

We use Post-It Notes to check for understanding.

Students write down their questions, answer my comprehension questions, and ask partners about work. Post It notes are a great tool.
