Calling All Coders... Ozobots to the Rescue!

Help me give my students experience in coding, with these tiny Ozobot robots. Using the iPad and coordinating app, they can program movements, including spins and pauses, using colored markers on paper. This will be STEAM-tastic!

My Students

Our school is located in a high-poverty, rural community. Our students love hands-on activities. They are very energetic and need to get up and get moving on a daily basis. As a teacher in a low-income district, where many of our children live in single-parent households and receive a free or reduced-price lunch, it is imperative to try to provide the best experiences for my students in the classroom as well as out of the classroom.

Since our students are young learners, we try and make our classroom as warm and welcoming as possible and also provide a very rigorous learning environment for them.

We want each and every one of them to have the best educational advantage a young learner can possibly have. The students live in a digital world and thrive with hands-on activities. Traditional teaching does not work anymore. Students are energetic and need to get up and get moving throughout the school day. Creating environments to be able to meet all the needs of students, in a variety of ways, is crucial for our students to master concepts and be successful.

My Project

When I saw the Ozobots in action at a recent teacher's conference, I knew that I needed this in my elementary technology classroom. My early elementary students will begin to understand the coding process and will be able to code and make these little robots boogie! After all, if learning is fun, and has immediate results, the learner is motivated to stick with it, and go deeper.

I like that children can create their own pathways and robot actions by simply using colored markers on a piece of paper.

I also like that motivated students can keep learning, and create endless programs for these tiny machines.

My hope is to have a Family STEAM night where we can showcase what our young learners can do.

We are starting with six Ozobots, with hopes of expanding the robot army in future projects. The requested iPad is to add to our collection so that the students will code their robot on the iPad and then the Ozobot robots will perform the functions. This skill incorporates higher-level thinking.

As teachers, we are faced with the challenge of preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist. Offering a variety of robotics experiences will give all of my students an additional avenue to gain the lifelong benefits of soft skills that all employers are seeking in their employees while expressing their imagination through innovation. Thank you for your support!
