My students need the souvenirs as they complete each segment of the game. A new game is presented each trimester, and the students earn a souvenir that represents the part of history they just learned about.
"Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn and you will", Vernon Howard.
Our school is a Title I school with well over half of our students from low-income families and many English Language Learners.
Our students are inquisitive children wanting to know about our world and what it holds. Many of our students have never traveled outside of our town, let alone outside of their own neighborhoods. They come to school each day ready to learn everything they can about the history of where they live and what makes California special.
My Project
Our project is a board game with each square a fact of history about our state. As the students read their own books and take a comprehension assessment, they will move their "game piece" spaces based on their percentage correct. As the students complete segments of the game, they earn a souvenir. By the end of the game, they have collected 11 pieces.
This game is designed for all students; English Language Learners, Special Needs, Gifted, and on-level students.
I love that each student is excited to continue reading, and the look of accomplishment and pride on their faces is the best feeling.
The game incorporates Language Arts, Reading, and Social Studies in a fun, encouraging, and callenging way for all 4th grades students. Each student will have the potential to earn 11 souvenirs by the end of the school year which are theirs to keep as reminders of their hard work. For example, Earth stressballs represent our planet, pinecones represent California mountain region, lizards and snakes represent California desert region, surfboards represent California coast, arrowheads represent Native Americans, brass bells represent Spanish missions in Caliornia, and California flags represent California statehood. The students earn the souvenirs at their own pace and challenge themselves to collect them all. The students are able to share with their families their knowledge of their world.
