Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a farming community nestled in the central valley. The high school serves a population of approximately 850 students. The student population is primarily hispanic and approximately 95% free and reduced lunch. Many of our students face a variety of challenges at home. My goal as a teacher here is to help broaden the horizons of my students and to assist them in reaching their goals.
The students in calculus desire to go to a 4-year university and many of them are the first in their families to do so.
Also, many of them want to continue on studying math or go into the science field. Their goal in taking calculus to push themselves and to help them get ahead.
My Project
At my school, we are trying to challenge our students to learn more and reach higher. We are working towards to helping more and more of our students pass the AP Calculus exam. One way that we are going to do this is by providing our kids with hands-on application of the principles they will learn in calculus and by giving them the resources they need to study for the AP test.
We have thought about what would help us study for the test and have decided that having these flash cards would help.
This will help our students study at their own pace and be independent in their learning. Also, it will help the students see what they need to know for the test and the type of questions they will see on the exam.
We are emphasizing studying for the AP test but we also want our kids to see the usefulness of calculus. In order to do this, we want to create mousetrap cars - this will allow them to see how calculus can be used in the real world. It will also help the students become more excited about studying math.
