Calculus and Angry Birds!

My students need the equipment to connect our iPad to our interactive whiteboard. We also need a printer.

My Students

Who would have thought that it was possible to teach Calculus in a fun, interactive way? With iPads and Angry Birds I can do just that!

Our school is in a very diverse community in suburban New York.

More and more of our students are receiving free and reduced lunch each year. My Calculus students are motivated students who have chosen to take this class for college credit while still in high school. However, there are still topics that they "just don't see the point of" and the supplies I am asking for would help with this problem.

My Project

Who wouldn't love to learn Calculus using an iPad and Angry Birds? The problem is that I only have one ipad for the 32 students in my class! However if I am able to connect my iPad to the interactive whiteboard, ALL of my students could benefit from it! They could take turns coming up to the board and showing their skills at Angry Birds to the rest of the class. In order to connect my iPad to the whiteboard, I would need a VGA cable and an Apple digital A/V adaptor. I would also love to be able to take screen shots of the students work and print them out on a printer in our room. Since there is only on iPad in the classroom, I would need a sturdy case for it (to keep it safe) and a stylus would be great for my students who have sensory issues.

Calculus can be a very interesting subject - when taught in a "fun" way.

With the materials I have requested I will be able to do just that! Using Angry Birds, I can have students predict where the red bird will land using the properties of parabolas and where the yellow bird will land using the equation of a tangent line. These materials can be reused each year to show my students many wonderful things about calculus!
