They wanted to design a vertical axis wind turbine, and after researching the best design, the students came up with a concept inspired by the shape of a rose. The students then went about designing a turbine blade within TinkerCAD (a free AutoCAD program for schools). With your generous donation, the students were able to purchase a 3D printer, a GoPro video camera, and voltage meters. These devices were instrumental in allowing them to progress with their research and design. The GoPro allowed them to capture slow-motion video of their designs, helping them observe and calculate rotational speed, while the voltage meters enabled them to measure electrical output. The 3D printer allowed them to quickly produce and refine prototypes without waiting weeks for access to shared equipment, keeping momentum and curiosity high throughout the process.\r\n\r\nThis technology has transformed how students learn by giving them direct, hands-on experience with the engineering design process. Instead of only discussing ideas in theory, they are actively testing, revising, and improving their designs based on real data. What has been especially exciting for students is the immediacy—being able to design something digitally in TinkerCAD and then hold a physical version shortly after has made the learning experience far more tangible and engaging. The ability to record and analyze slow-motion footage has also introduced them to a level of scientific analysis that feels authentic and meaningful, helping them think more like engineers and researchers.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially embraced this new technology, taking initiative in both design and testing. Some have spent additional time refining blade shapes, while others have taken the lead in analyzing video data and electrical output. As you can see from the pictures, they are well on their way to designing a wind turbine that could be used at the school to power lights in our rain garden or even act as a charging station for students after school. Your support has not only provided tools—it has sparked creativity, problem-solving, and a sense of ownership in their work that will stay with them well beyond this project.\r\n\r\nSincerely,","fullyFundedDate":1768593198851,"projectUrl":"project/samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-innovation-aw/9986315/","projectTitle":"Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Innovation Award","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Trupia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1652077_orig.jpg?crop=2150,2150,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1618364116949","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1652077"},{"teacherId":9002812,"projectId":9966723,"letterContent":"Your generous donations have helped my students prepare for a high broadcasting contest.
