This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our class set of calculators are slowly dying. The solar battery only lasts so long. Our class set is more like a quarter class set. Use of calculators in the middle school classroom supports Math Practice 5 - Use appropriate tools strategically.
During class work and tests, one calculator is shared among four students, which consumes valuable time in which students could be learning instead of waiting for a calculator to use.
Students are working hard using their number sense to make simple calculations, but when the calculations become more complex, the use of calculators free up cognitive space to analyze and problem-solve math problems.
Middle school students need to become proficient in using calculators because they will be using calculators on the SBAC test, in high school and beyond.
Please help me give my students the tools they need to succeed in math class.
