Calculators Needed! Something to Count On...No Pun Intended!

My students need user friendly and specific calculators with storage for daily use in order to prepare for graduation requirements.

My Students

We are a Title I school but that only counts in the elementary. I work with grades 9-12. I am an Educational Assistant and I work one on one or in small groups with them. Many of our students are failing or at risk of failing with the highest percentages of students from low income households that qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch.

Many of our students live with one parent, a grandparent or legal guardian.

We have 57 students on an IEP. They all have special needs either emotionally or cognitively. All 57 kids take math on a daily basis because it is required that they have four years of math in high school. Not having the necessary school supplies is just another obstacle that they need to overcome. Something as simple as a calculator that works and is in the same place every day, can be something they can count on. I like to think of myself and our teachers as that same thing in this world of uncertainty.

My Project

We need user friendly scientific calculators to prepare our students for what they need to achieve to graduate. When each student is using the same type of calculator and learning the same process they have practiced for years, learning math becomes less of a challenge for so many of our special needs students who have other challenges to deal with. In our classroom using the calculator is a skill that needs to be mastered.

Finding a calculator that works or buying one that is upwards of $20 is just not feasible to our students.

In high school we are preparing our students for the future with hands on skills. Our students begin using this calculator in 6th grade and continue throughout high school. The process of purchasing and storing them for the students will allow them one less obstacle to overcome.
