Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school so there is a large population of students who live in poverty and often come to class without the necessary supplies. In the past year, we have also experienced an influx of immigrants from all over the world. The students bring with them different abilities and experiences, both academically and personally, so classroom discussions in each period are never the same because of the students' rich cultural backgrounds.
I've been teaching for 17 years and in the past five, I've noticed an increase in students who come to class with heavier emotional baggage.
This burden often results in them acting out or being withdrawn. To tackle the issue, I delved into psychology books, teen behaviors, and how to deal with difficult students. Teaching is becoming more challenging than ever with increased demands on the curriculum, methodology, and complex millenial psychology. I believe I'm heading in the right direction by investing my time in understanding their behaviors because it has made a huge positive inprovement in my classroom culture.
My Project
Every year I ask students to buy their own calculators but only about half of them have one. I have some to loan out but they usually break at some point due to frequent use and occasional vandalism. Our class is 7th grade Pre-Algebra but there are students who are still operating at 2nd and 3rd grade level. Since the math curriculum is mostly linear, it is difficult to move forward without basic skills. If I focus too much on the arithmetics, my students would get bored and often give up. A calculator helps to bridge the gap. Thank you!
