My Students
My group is as diverse as they come in all aspects including ability, race, and socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. My classes are made of mostly sophomores, but all grade levels are represented throughout chemistry and AP chemistry.
My school and district are rapidly growing, creating many more sections and students per class than we are used to, as well as a much more diverse group of students.
I began teaching 5 sections of chemistry, which has now grown to 20 and will continue to grow, based on district projections and a new science scope and sequence.
My Project
The majority of students cannot afford their own calculators and are frequently fighting to get the “good” calculators. I have 10 available for sharing for my 25-30 student classes. Calculators are a necessity in chemistry and students will no longer have to argue over who had it last time, and will not have to wait until one is free during a test. Students often struggle using a calculator because they don’t get enough practice with scientific notation or log functions. A class set of 25 of these simple scientific calculators would make a huge difference in the everyday practice that students get in my classroom.
