Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are sophomores and juniors who love to learn. They enjoy seeing what we have discussed in class in their lives outside of high school.
My chemistry students love to see the topics we talk about up close and in a new way!
They are curious about the world but are woefully isolated and many of them lack the resources to experience truly engaging activities.
My students want to see scientific concepts in a way that they can relate to. They need the opportunity to engage in activities that will allow the concepts to be more accessible. Most importantly, they need the materials and resources to meet the demands of our curriculum.
My Project
We need calculators. The TI-30x calculators offer an array of functions that students will use throughout the year. The basic calculators we currently have lack the functionality required in a chemistry classroom.
We currently have 10 basic calculators to serve a classroom of 26.
Sharing calculators, and waiting until everyone has tried to solve a problem, can really slow down the flow during a class period.
It is time for a serious update to ensure students are up to speed with their math ability, as well as current with what most students use in a chemistry, or science classroom in general.
