Calculators For Chemistry Class

My students need 20 calculators to perform chemistry calculations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a Title 1 school located in the inner city about 7 miles from downtown. 95% if the student population is on federal free or reduced lunch. 99% of the student population is minorities. Purchasing a calculator for their children isn't always parents' first priority.

More than 95% of the students at my school live below the poverty line. 99% of them are minorities. My students live in a rough neighborhood. Just today on my way to work, I saw a police helicopter hovering over an area less than five blocks away from the school. There is a liquor store right across the street, and gangs control the neighborhoods that surround the school. Despite this, most of my students behave and act like normal 15 and 16 year old kids. I think I have more students with serious problems than in higher income areas, but at the end of the day, the majority of my students’ worries are about their social circles and their facebook pages. 70% of the student population is Latino and 30% of the student population is African American. We have almost 500 students. The other day, one of my students gave me a very nice Valentine’s Day card. In it, she wrote about how she loves coming to my class and how she feels I’m a very caring teacher.

My students need calculators to perform the various mathematical problems they will encounter in a college prep chemistry course. More than a quarter of a student’s final grade in chemistry will be directly related to math. It is difficult to practice these calculations in class when students are constantly forced to share the calculators with the person sitting next to them. These are basic classroom materials that are not available because of budget cuts and school debt. The alternative to providing the students with calculators is to have them bring their own or use other electronic devices. Having them bring their own works for about 5 % to 10% of the students. The vast majority of them cannot afford a calculator of their own and neither can their parents. The other alternative is to let them use their electronic devices like Ipods and cell phones. As you can imagine, this is not good as it can provide many distractions for the students.

By donating these calculators, you will help prepare my students for college. I know calculators are not the most exciting thing to donate, but the students will get more use out of them than materials for a lab that only lasts 2 or 3 days. Many of my students are will be the first generation in their families to go to college. Sadly, while my school district is making progress in ending social inequity, many of the students who graduate and go on to college do not succeed. Many of the labs
