This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a world where there are problems at home, your neighborhood is surrounded by gang violence and drug addictions and your only escape is school. The first time you used a graphing calculator sharing with 2 or 3 other students you were fascinated! This first time happens to my students at the age of 14.

Let's start by explaining how awesome and precious my students are despite the challenges they face every day.

Their problems range from broken homes, abuse, neglect, drug addictions and the list goes on and on. The same students come to school every day craving the attention from their teachers, hoping to receive the support of their peers, and best of all working towards a better future. While other children may take technology for granted, my students are fascinated by the little that we have. The first time my Algebra 2 students had access to a graphing calculator they were so fascinated by it, they were afraid of scratching it or accidentally breaking it. My Algebra I students have not even seen a graphing calculator because I don't have enough for everyone to share. They want a chance at life and our school and teachers want to give them that chance.

My Project

I am requesting 6 TI 84 plus graphing calculators for my Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 classes. There are endless number of activities we can do once we have these resources. For starters, I like for my Algebra 2 students to be able to make connections between translation of graphs. This is an essential component to building conceptual understanding. They can also compare different types of graphs, analyze different factors that can influence a graph, and derive different equations given graphs. As for the Algebra I class, these calculators can be used on a roller coaster project where students have to design and build a roller coaster on the linear equation unit. Students can also use these calculators for quick check of understanding, and make comparisons between linear and quadratic equations. With the use of graphing calculators, students' retention of mathematical concepts will be longer and meaningful. Math should be and would be more fun to learn.

Overall, I just want to offer my students a piece of the modern world that every child deserves.

It does not matter what city they live in or the financial circumstances of their family, every child deserves the best that education has to offer. We need to team up and build a community of support where children can learn to their maximum potential, to meet that high school requirement, be ready for college, and become productive citizens. Please help me support these children.
