My Students

The students at our school come from a diverse background. A majority of them are the first in their families to go to college and our school provides them with this opportunity. They are hard working and kind students who really care about improving their life and their families' lives.

The students are respectful in the classroom and they work hard to get their homework completed.

Many of them don't have a lot of resources at home. I am very proud of their efforts and choices. We are able to have great discussions in Math about not only the materials, but how it relates to their lives.

My Project

At school, we emphasize doing their mathematics by hand so that they are prepared for the higher Algebra that they will need to do. I have found that students (in general) are pretty calculator dependent and unsure about their work. To help with this, I have had them do their work by hand and then check it on their calculators.

Not all calculators are created equal and many calculators are not user friendly.

I have found the students that are the most unsure of their math abilities are using simple calculators that just don't simplify the math appropriately to make their calculators helpful at all for future math.
