At school, we emphasize doing their mathematics by hand so that they are prepared for the higher Algebra that they will need to do. I have found that students (in general) are pretty calculator dependent and unsure about their work. To help with this, I have had them do their work by hand and then check it on their calculators. Not all calculators are created equal and many calculators are not user friendly. I have found the students that are the most unsure of their math abilities are using simple calculators that just don't simplify the math appropriately to make their calculators helpful at all for future math.
