Ms. Toliver from Richmond VA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
We need graphing calculators to help students effectively grasp concepts in Algebra I and Geometry.

My third block students are the ones organizing this student-led project. I have 23 intelligent, self-driven students in my third block. They have taken into consideration obstacles that they've endured this year, and as a result, are trying to help their peers for the latter years. These students have been with me an entire school year now, so they are able to understand the importance of technology in the classroom. Jakyra, Di'Mon, and Dwayne were team leaders within the classroom. They were able to guide the others during the organization process. It was great to actually see them taking lead and the class taking their future into their own hands.
After seeing how successful their previous student-led project, Jakyra, Dwayne, Tynasya, and Di'Mon came up with the idea to do a student-led project for the students I would have next year. My third block has remediation every other day. During remediation, these four students gathered with a few others to develop materials that would be most needed based on their experiences. The list was then presented to me and narrowed down. I asked each of them to write a couple of sentences on why they felt like we needed these resources.
The 21st-century is a technological age. Exposing the students to TI-84 plus CE calculators in the middle school years will allow them to become familiar with the calculator and its functions. This newer-generation calculator will be used in mathematics courses in college. It will help them develop the skills necessary for their success.
"We were able to get batteries for our calculators through our last project. It would be great if the students next year didn't have to worry about batteries, charging a calculator is so much easier."
- Jakyra
"Ms. T has one of those calculators. It's so cool because the graphs are in color! It's so much easier to tell which line belongs where then. It's so much easier to understand."
- Dwayne
"They'll be able to take the old calculators home for the year to help with homework."
- Di'Mon
We are going to be mathematical leaders in this project because we are going to get everyone excited about it. A leader takes responsibility and action by accepting the challenge to become better. Sometimes we are not very excited about doing classwork, but it will be better with access to every tool every time. We're setting positive examples by helping next year's students. We will share this web link on social media site, verify the order and make sure it's delivered if it gets funded.
I understand how much into the classroom with buying supplies and teaching. The things that we want can make the classroom so much better. The students next year deserve better supplies than the stuff we get stuck with. It's not fair that we're not given the same opportunities as other kids. I want to go to college and I feel like I'm not going to know as much as the other kids when I get there because I wasn't able to end the cycle.
