My students need an ELMO document camera, graph paper, mechanical pencils and rulers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My classroom is full of bright students who have yet to be given the opportunity to succeed. I currently teach Algebra 1, Trigonometry, and Calculus. My students Algebra students range from 9th through 12th grade. My Trigonometry students are in 11th and 12th grade and my Calculus students are in 12th grade. My community is a critical shortage district with at risk students. The community is very poor and lacks much in the way of resources for students.
My students are unable to afford their supplies for school. They still have no graph paper, few pencils, and no rulers. Many of my students live alone or with a distant relative. Most of the students are forced to work at fast-food restaurants in order to feed themselves as well as their children. I asked them to purchase these material but they looked at me and asked with what money?! The county the school is in is known for its sexual abuse. The students are often beaten and abused in unmentionable ways. One of my students told me she was pregnant with her own uncle. With concerns that should only be for adults, these students have to manage high school and raising their own children.
Because of these circumstances, my students desperately need graph paper, rulers, and pencils. This will enhance their learning experience. It is hard form them to draw their Cartesian plane's to scale and many of their graphs run together. This is hurting their academic growth. They also seem to be using broken pencils or pens that smear. This is hurting their learning as well. Rulers will help them be able to draw the lines they need. Right now they are all wavy and messy. Sloppiness is one of the biggest hurts in academia. The Elmo Projector will also help the students. There are no lockers in the school so this will enable me to allow the students to only bring their books sometimes. It would also allow me to differentiate instruction within my class. I would be able to put a few other assignments on the Elmo with clear directions that I could use to help the Enhancement students get ahead while the others work on practicing on worksheets and such.
Your help will enable my students to leave behind the chains that hold them in their small town. They need these chains to be broken so they will be free to leave and go to college and receive a proper education. They need me to guide them but they need you to empower them with the resources they need to succeed. Thank you for your time and consideration.
