I plan to \"chunk\" the reading into several chapters at a time. This will allow me to introduce the vocabulary for each section via a word wall with the words and definitions so students can refer to as they read. This chunking will also allow students to complete activities along the way to support their comprehension. \r\n\r\nI have been re-reading these books and making many notes for sections that would be wonderful examples for certain standards or fantastic excerpts for practice test questions. We'll begin reading the first book in a few weeks. For the first week, we'll do much of the reading together or with partners. Since my district wants teachers to focus on informational standards every other week, I will focus, during those weeks, on building student knowledge about various aspects of the novel by reading informational passages along with more of the novel. \r\n\r\nMy students are mostly young people of color, so I expect \"Their Eyes Were Watching God\" will carry deep meaning for them.
