Calculating the Diminishing Achievement Gap

My students need 25 calculators to complete daily assignments and assessments.

I teach Mathematics to 10th graders. I teach in a high-poverty urban community in which students do not have the means to purchase calculators.

In high school mathematics, there are many calculations that must be done to solve problems. Most of these calculations cannot be done with simply paper and pencil. Calculators are needed for most of these calculations. My students cannot afford calculators.

With calculators, my students will no longer feel discouraged and lost in math class. They will be able to focus on their work rather than giving up because they are not able to complete their assignments. I need a calculator for each of my students so they may completely understand all their work and proceed to the next grade level.

One of the reasons I am a teacher is to help close the Achievement Gap in America. One reason why there is an achievement gap in our school systems is because of poverty stricken communities and a lack of funding. With this funding, you are helping close the Achievement Gap. Your help will ensure that my students can succeed in Math class and take one step closer to graduation.
