Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school is not an easy, comfortable experience for advantaged kids; my students are navigating these years with challenges associated with high risk learners, including language barriers, financial and housing instability, and non-citizen status. Our class is a mix of nationalities and experiences--both thrilling and traumatic. When my kids come to class, they bring the same energy and excitement for learning as children from any neighborhood.
I feel a strong sense of responsibility to give my kids opportunities and access to tools they need to be successful.
My Project
Many kids in my class have gaps in their education, and math deficiencies are particularly difficult to fill. With graphing calculators, the students have the opportunity to use multiple functions in various levels of math.
The objective is to teach middle school math principles, including learning how to use an advanced but popular calculator, to enable a smooth transition into high school.
The selected calculator will reinforce order of operations, allow students to compute positive and negative numbers, and develop an understanding of slope-intercept form--and then graph the line--all of which is necessary in core and advanced high school math, calculus, and statistic classes.
