This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi, I am a first year 6th grade mathematics teacher in East Oakland. My students are wonderful, my staff is amazing, but my resources need a little work. In an attempt to make my lessons more student-centered and engaging, I have tried to use real life examples or experiments when learning new concepts. The problem I have run into, however, is that big numbers often accompany these lessons. And we have no calculators in the classrooms. My class ends up wasting a lot of time multiplying large numbers and become distracted enough to miss the concepts. In particular, I love a lesson called "discovering Pi," in which students use string and round objects to discover the value of pi on their own. This lesson would be much more effective with calculators. So I am requesting a class set (40) of the TI Explorer calculators, which are designed for middle school use. Our students would be able to have much more comprehensive lessons and learn to love math!
