My Students
Students obviously need to have strong math skills to function in today's world. Calculators can be a wonderful tool for students to learn concepts behind the calculations, look for patterns, and problem solve.
Students in my school come from a wide range of economic levels, and we have a 35% poverty rate.
My class is a diverse group in terms of learning styles and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Many of them are enthusiastic and ready to learn, while others need constant coaching and encouragement. I believe strongly that all can learn, and my job is to find ways to reach them most effectively.
My Project
The many new technologies available these days demand that citizens in our world make sense of answers, estimate well, and understand the concepts behind calculations. There are many advanced calculators and apps available on tablets or computers. However, some of them are too simple and don't follow the mathematical rule of order of operations, and others are too complex and have confusing functionalities that are more than my students need. Learning about fractions and order of operations are two specific areas where my students use calculators frequently in the classroom to investigate concepts and patterns. This calculator allows students to enter fractions as they would be written, and has a two-line screen so that they can see what they have already done. In addition, it is required that all students have a calculator available during state wide testing, and we do not currently have enough to go around.
Our current calculators are well used, but are slowly dying.
We no longer have a class set available. These calculators will allow students to identify and investigate patterns, explore the challenging conceptual area of fractions, and cement learning of order of operations.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
