We have an extremely amazing and diverse student population at our high school. We have many ethnic groups, we are near a military base, we have many students who receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and all of the students in my high school (COMPASS) program are on the Autism spectrum. Our COMPASS Program stands for "COMmunity Promoting Academic and Social Supports! My students are all amazing and have incredible and exceptional gifts and abilities academically, as well as broad areas of deficit, such as in social skills, organization, executive functioning, etc. In addition to Autism, some of my students also have learning disabilities in reading, written language and/or mathematics.
My Project
My COMPASS Program students work diligently on math problem solving and calculations daily. Some students struggle with mental math, and we need calculators in place for students to check their own work and to assist students in higher level math classes. I had 4 TI-84 calculators in my program for over five years and and am down to one that works and one that works intermittently. This is very frustrating to my 10 students who are diligent workers, and some need to borrow them to complete homework, as they cannot afford their own calculators.
Having five calculators, protective covers, and AAA batteries would enable our students to share tools, which is a good growth activity/social skills practice for them, do math independently, and utilize school time in study skills class to get tutoring and work through and check models of mathematical problems.
