My COMPASS Program students work diligently on math problem solving and calculations daily. Some students struggle with mental math, and we need calculators in place for students to check their own work and to assist students in higher level math classes. I had 4 TI-84 calculators in my program for over five years and and am down to one that works and one that works intermittently. This is very frustrating to my 10 students who are diligent workers, and some need to borrow them to complete homework, as they cannot afford their own calculators. Having five calculators, protective covers, and AAA batteries would enable our students to share tools, which is a good growth activity/social skills practice for them, do math independently, and utilize school time in study skills class to get tutoring and work through and check models of mathematical problems.
