My Students

Hello, I am currently working in an urban metropolitan school system with 11th and 12th grade students that are at risk of not graduating. At this time, we have approximately 80 students. A majority of the students are minorities on free or reduced lunch and cannot afford some school materials. Since this is the first full year of the program, our resources are limited.

As a new alternative program in our first year, we are finding that our students come from diverse backgrounds with different sets of knowledge and skills.

All of our students attend school half day and go to work or attend the career center for the rest of the day. Most of the work is done in class and it is necessary to provide students with essential materials.

My Project

The scientific calculators will be used every day by students in all of my math classes. We are currently using the basic solar powered Casio HS-10. This calculator is difficult to use especially when students are working on multi-step problems that involve long calculations. Students often times get frustrated with the calculator because if they type in the wrong number in the middle of a calculation they have to clear the calculator and retype all the steps. Since a majority of my students need Business Math to graduate, a decent calculator is necessary.

Having these 25 scientific calculators will improve my students' chances of completing their math credits and graduating.
