My students need calculators to start the year. With the new increase in rigor due to the Common Core, it is essential that they compute quickly.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and want immediate feedback that their calculations are correct. In order to support them in this process it would essential to have calculators. Currently, our calculators do not have the proper functions to help aid them in meeting the Common Core.

My students come from a mixed socioeconomic community.

Some live in populated areas and some are unbelievably rural. The amount of poverty that is in the community is incredible. Last time I checked almost 80 percent of the student population was free or reduced lunch. However, these students work extremely hard and take their education very seriously. If it wasn't for the support of the amazing teachers at the school, some of these students would be lost in the shuffle. By teaming it allows the teachers to get to know each student extremely well and helps us meet their needs effectively.

My Project

My students will use the calculators on a daily basis. They will use them to convert from fractions to decimals, decimals to percents, integers, order of operations, exponents, and graphing. They will learn how to do all of these things without the calculator first, but once they have learned the concept it will be essential to learn how to use the calculator to get to their solutions more efficiently.

The donations of these items will improve the overall moral of my classroom by allowing students to move more quickly through their lessons and allow them to compute By having these available at a moments notice will take the financial strain of their family to buy them one.

Even though they are only about $14 dollars each, that is a big deal for my students' families. These will be used as a support tool for their learning and will not replace the basic skills.
