Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in 7th and 8th grade and attend a Title 1 public middle school in Southern California. Title 1 schools are in areas with low socioeconomic areas and receive federal funding so all its students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our student do not enjoy math when they come into our 7th and 8th grade classes. They have many outside factors that distract their learning.
Our student body is very diverse and supports a variety of cultures and languages.
Students in my class range from gifted and talented to students with learning disabilities, and everything in between. This project will help create a learning environment where all students feel successful. My ultimate goal is to improve basic skill, content core topics, and a love for mathematics.
My Project
Students will use the TI-30X IIS calculators for problem solving activities. Students are more motivated and engaged when they can use a calculator to assist in solving real-world problems. Access to calculators that do scientific notation is needed at seventh and eighth grade.
The students will be able to see success, build their desire to learn mathematics, and see the magic of getting the correct or possible solution.
One of my goals is to have students see the excitement and joy of solving complex mathematical problems successfully. The use of calculator opens the doors to all students and assist those who struggle with basic computations.
My hope is to make the instruction enjoyable so students will want to learn math. Research shows that students learn basic facts better through repetition and games which will be possible with the calculators. With larger class sizes, more supplies and calculators are needed. By funding this project, you will put the tools in the hands of the students to ensure that they can be successful.
