The school district I work in is in a very urban area, and is a title 1 school. My students are AWESOME but unfortunately do not always get the best resources to help them succeed. Because they are so bright, they realize they get the short end of the stick and it's very frustrating. Ninety percent of our school is Spanish speaking. The school is full of teachers and staff who care about the student as if they were family. The students are willing to go for a wall for teachers especially when they know the teachers care so much!
My Project
Graphing calculators in the classroom will enrich student understanding of advanced mathematical concepts. This technology will not only aid in student conceptual understanding of math, but will also be a catalyst for critical thinking because students will be able to access more information than can be uncovered with pencil and paper. Becoming proficient at how to use a graphing calculator will also prepare students for success in AP classes and in college.
The biggest issue in our area is trying to get students to achieve a proficient test scores on their algebra keystone.
If the students do not pass, they cannot graduate. While the students are taking the test many of them do not even know how to use the calculator even though there are SO MANY functions that would help them succeed. This is because the students do not get the opportunity to work with them in the classroom. Many of them are broken, malfunctioning, or just plain old!
