Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school with minority students that come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them are English Language Learners that enter our classes below grade level in reading, writing, and mathematics. Despite this, our students are very energetic, eager, and excited to learn, especially when learning occurs in a hands-on, engaging way!
Our school has just become a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) academy, and we know how important it is to provide our students the learning opportunities, experiences, and events that encompass all that STEAM and 21st Century Skills are known for: communication and collaboration among students, creativity and critical thinking.
My Project
My students and I absolutely love 3D printing and STEAM and want to share our knowledge with our families. We have been involved in several 3D print STEAM projects this school year, including printing and assembling prosthetic hands for children in need. However, my students have a desire to show their families how to 3D print as well.
Many of our families are unfamiliar with STEAM and 3D printing, but we want to change that by inviting them each quarter to visit our classroom and/or makerspace lab to enjoy an innovative treat as they grab some coffee made by our wonderful Keurig coffee maker and work with their child to engineer and design delicious 3D printed pancakes using the requested Apple MacBook Air and PancakeBots.
We also would like a Keurig coffee maker.
In order to prepare my students for the 21st century, I must provide opportunities for them to engage in creative projects that promote critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Students will accomplish this by adding a splash of 3D-delicious and a whole "latte" innovation during our Cafe Innovate Family STEAM events!
