Mr. Hausig from Coopersville MI is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Bye Bye Desks! Hello Flexible Seating!

My students need improvements in their physical learning environment. Comfortable seating options allow them to create workspaces that work for them.

My Students

Children in our classroom are guided to be bold, compassionate, and critical thinkers about the universe of ideas. We see that learning is about more than receiving a grade or adulation. Learning challenges and empowers who we are, and helps mold our understandings of a changing world. Students in our classroom are taught to welcome challenges, and see failures through the lens of a growth mindset.

One of the mantras of our classroom is that “You are more…”.

We encourage students to be compassionate and to view one another as more than...

… a test score.

… the number of friends you have.

… the size of your home.

… a skin color.

… the number of likes you have on Facebook.

… the clothes you wear.

… your athletic abilities.

Next year, I get the opportunity to teach reading and writing to approximately sixty fifth grade students.

My Project

Over the years, I have often wondered why I continue to have desks in my classroom. They don't match up with my instructional style. They are uncomfortable and clunky. They eat lots of space. They house annoying vortexes of half-eaten snacks and crumpled papers. Enough!!! This coming school year, I want to make some changes!

Providing flexible seating for my students is about more than reshaping the aesthetics of our classroom, it is about creating an environment that seamlessly blends with instruction and learning.

The Wobble chairs, bean bags, and other items will help students create comfortable workspaces during our reading and writing workshop. In our classroom, movement and flexibility are premia. Whether students are discussing character motivations in their book clubs, working in small strategy groups to grow their understandings of theme interpretation, or tapping into their creative energies when writing personal narratives, students excel when they are comfortable and have some ownership of their environment. Recent educational research shows that that that flexible seating can boost educational performance:

Simply put, learning and working are much easier and enjoyable when we are comfortable! There are plenty of good reasons why we don't see most of the chairs and desks that populate our schools in the corporate offices of Microsoft, Google, or Lockheed Martin!

Thank you for partnering with us in this effort to transform our classroom!
