Common Core is going to take students into a deeper understanding of their math knowledge. These students have not encountered this rigor or depth using our old curriculum and resources!
My students are in the second grade and due to funding cuts in our small school system, they are forced to be in one larger class.
They do not receive extra funds from our school system for manipulatives or resources that will help their understanding. Our elementary school is one of 5 in our county and the only school to not receive Title 1 funding since we miss the percentage by less than 5%. Many of my students come from young families or their parents are struggling to make ends meet due to loss of employment. They love to learn and thirsty for knowledge!
My Project
The selected items (problem solving cards, building equivalency learning centers, and place value number hunt) will be in centers where the students will be able to explore and deepen their understanding of the standards being taught. Time and money is no longer taught to students in the prior grades so this will be their first encounter with core instruction and they are going to need multiple experiences to understand the concept. The write on and wipe off clocks and number lines will be used in large group, small group, and centers. They will get to use each of the manipulatives daily throughout their morning work, class work, and exploration/center time.
My "busy bees" are looking forward to "stinging" everyone with their new math knowledge.
