"Buzzing Around the room"

I am a special education Kindergarten teacher in West Warwick, RI.

This is an amazing, yet low-income district, and we are always trying to "do more with less". I am always trying to research new ways to engage students and instill a love of learning. Last year I began experimenting with alternative seating and I personally purchased 5 stools ($5 each), 2 mats ($5 each), 2 plastic lap tables, ($7 each), 6 crates with wood, fabric and foam padding to make seats ($15 each), and 23 clipboards ($3 each). My students loved the flexibility they were given to choose their seating and the independence to discover where they "learn best".

At the start of this school year I will have eleven students with special needs and twelve typical peers. I would love to be able to add an option for those students who struggle with attention and need to wiggle while they work in order to aid in their focus and attention to task.

My Project

These ball chairs will provide my students, both with and without special needs, the opportunity to explore differentiated seating. Students will increase their independence in choosing seating options that work best for them, increase their attention span, and become more actively engaged in the learning process. Students will be communicating and collaborating with one another, which helps develop a sense of community in the classroom and builds social skills. These 21st century skills are crucial to early childhood development, and motivates them to come to school each day and be their best!

My students and I ask for your help in purchasing some desperately needed classroom seating options in order to support their individual needs.
