Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are a diverse group who speak a variety of languages, come from many different places, engage in various extracurricular activities, and embrace countless new experiences. What they have in common is a desire to be liked and accepted by their peers.

Real life experienes and books help to build empathy and compassion in students by sharing the stories of others.

The books in this project make it easier to celebrate differences and the importance of caring for others. The books focus on a variety of topics including loss and grief, being new to a school, and physical disabilities. After reading each book, students will illustrate pictures to express how they can show compassion and kindness to someone like the character in the book. The books will give my students the opportunity to experience how compassion and empathy for others can make the world a better place. The portable printer will allow them given opportunties to create positive affirmation notes which will be used to encourage others through compassion and empathy. The button maker will be used to create compassion buttons and caught being good buttons for students as a reminder of the importance of showing compassion and empathy to others. They will also give them to other students who they feel have shown compassion and empathy. I will monitor and assess student understanding of the concepts of compassion and empathy through their illustrations, group discussions, and student explanations of who will be receiving the buttons and positive notes.
