We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) First-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a large high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 22 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Many struggle with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. They inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
It never fails to amaze me to behold the wonder of nature by witnessing the metamorphosis of the Painted Lady Butterfly with my students! There are four distinct life stages of the butterfly: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The visible characteristics that define each transition are both breathtaking and a STEM phenomenon. Having my children view the metamorphic cycle of changes in the life of a butterfly will increase their STEM knowledge and abilities within further studies.
With this classroom kit, my students will be able to study the real life cycle of the butterfly right in front of their eyes!
How awesome to actually observe, take notes, draw, and discuss all the stages of the butterflies life cycle in our own classroom! They will also be releasing them into the wild once they have reached the butterfly stage. They will be able to answer the question, "What are the stages in the Life Cycle of the Butterfly?"
My students will have a better understanding of the Life Cycle of the Butterfly by raising, feeding, and watching the metamorphosis of this creature. This will also help my students gain more responsibility and teamwork by helping each other get smarter together. My students especially love hands on projects. This would fascinate all of my students and help them gain more interest in science.
