Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has an awesome spot for a beautiful butterfly and hummingbird garden, if we JUST had the materials to start building!
My students are a group of gifted first through fourth graders.
They love learning, and have decided they would like to give back by building a garden in the courtyard area of our school to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. This space would not only offer them the opportunity to give back to the school, but to also offer an outdoor learning area for the 600 plus students on our campus.
My Project
This empty area is visible from our main hallway and from the atrium windows in the library. There is also a sidewalk that crosses the courtyard that joins two wings of the school. This area was originally the play area for the school when it was small and first built. Now, it's just a vast empty space. My students decided that it offers both sunny and shady areas, thanks to a HUGE tree in the middle of the space, and would be the perfect spot to build a outdoor learning space for our school. They have already begun drafting plans and researching what type plants to grow. We have been offered free cuttings/seedlings of various herbs to get started - dill, rosemary, thyme, lavender and sage! We also have a donation of wildflower seeds! Now we just need the soil and tools!
The raised beds, potting soil, gardening tools and rain barrel would provide my students with the materials they need to get started on this awesome, organic, outdoor learning area for our school.
