Butterfly, Butterfly, Where Did You Go?

My students need basic butterfly garden tools and equipment to create a butterfly garden and track migration of butterflies through Oklahoma.

My Students

Didn't you just love learning about Science growing up? Science is a subject that just HAS to be taught in a hands-on, minds-on approach. My students need to to be able to get involved with their learning, and this butterfly-migration project is just the way to do that.

I teach 5th grade in an inner-city school in Oklahoma.

As a result of mainstreaming, I have many students with special needs and those who need to learn in classrooms outside of the "traditional" classroom environment. All of my students love learning and being in school, and readily accept any opportunity to grow and develop. They come to school daily with a desire to learn and understand the beautiful world they live in. Unfortunately, my students have not had many opportunities to explore the world in which they live. Many are from poverty- stricken homes where parents simply cannot afford any luxuries outside of the home. These students thrive in a learning environment where they can be actively engaged in their learning and manipulate the environment in which they live.

My Project

This butterfly garden will allow for so many learning opportunities not only within my class, but within the school. We will be constructing the garden from scratch, so the students will have to research the location and vegetation for the garden. The students will also get to learn the value of leadership, and the importance of picking the best person to do the job, as we begin building this garden and planting the flowers. Once this has been completed, we will be charting the migration of different species of butterflies as they travel through Oklahoma. This butterfly garden will provide a multidisciplinary approach to learning, since we can use it for Science, Math, Social Studies, Reading, and Language Arts. It will also be used as a leadership tool for the construction and upkeep, as well as a project these students can be proud of and show off to visitors.

This project has been in the planning stage for two years - a lot of time and research has been done to ensure this butterfly garden meets the needs of our school and the project.

I can only make this happen for my students with your help! Through generous donations, we can provide these students with a learning experience that will shape lives. This garden will continue to build our school and community for many years to come, and provide unlimited learning opportunities for our students.
