My students need a hand-on, educational and exciting trip to Butterflies LIVE at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and art supplies to continue their studies of butterflies and insects through creative art projects.
My amazing students are in the Functional Skills program at my high school and range in age from 9-12th grade and Post-High which serves students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. My students have varying degrees of disabilities but they all have an interest in and would benefit from learning about insects. One of my student loves all types of bugs, especially butterflies!
Despite their learning or intellectual disabilities, my students are incredibly curious about the natural world.
They love to be outside in nature and they all love to learn about new things! The best way for my students to learn is through a combination of hands-on experiences and visual instruction.
My Project
The opportunity to visit Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and experience Butterflies LIVE will profoundly impact my students in a positive way. The exhibit which features thousands of butterflies is an incredible experience that I want to share with my students.
Fostering the natural curiosity that my students have in regards to insects, animals and the natural world is one of my main goals as an educator.
My students love to learn about animals and insects, especially bugs and butterflies, and taking them on this trip would be an amazing experience for them.
Once back in the classroom, I would follow up this field trip with hands-on art activities that continue to expand their knowledge about insects and butterflies through a variety of projects using the requested materials such as the Insect Craft Kit, butterfly shaped canvases and insect painting on 11x14 canvas and colorful drawings of butterflies and other insects.
